Corrective feedback (CF) mainly implies to any reaction of teachers which make the students pay attention to accuracy of anything they have just produced orally or in written texts. One of the most famous theories in support of CF was introduced by Lev Vygotsky (1978, 1986) that is sociocultural theory. According to him, mediation, regulation, internalization and Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) are essential keys in this theory which are connected to CF and language acquisition. A mediated process of man mental activities is recognized by cultural communications and by participating in social interactions we learn a language that mediates our mental activity. CF is a kind of mediation that assists learners in self-editing and it facilitates internalization. Therefore, using error correction should be integrated in teaching to students. The students who receive CF not only enable to understand their errors but also they remember the problem and its correction on long run.

Semiotic Mediation and Social Mediation

Revision with unchanged content. The acquisition of intersubjectivity, as the result of semiotic mediation and social mediation, is the critical issue in moral education. As Vygotsky lamented, morality is beginning to acquire an increasingly temporal character, therefore, the essence of moral education can not be found in unnecessary debate on moral stages or instruments. Rather, it should be concerned with how individuals improve their ability to think about one moral issue from multiple perspectives, and how young adults can learn to respect the different perspectives, with the assistance of semiotic and social mediation. This project returns to the basics of human development, which are semiotic mediation and social mediation, and uses open text and group activity to facilitate moral semiosis. The results suggest that, if reality is open to multiple perspectives, instructional texts and activities for moral competency should also be open for learners. This study provides alternative perspectives of semiotics and sociocultural development theory applied to moral educators as well as instructional designers and learning scientists.

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Cultural mediation is one of the fundamental mechanisms of distinctly human development according to cultural-historical psychological theory introduced by Lev Vygotsky and developed in the work of his numerous followers worldwide. Vygotsky investigated child development and how this was guided by the role of culture and interpersonal communication. Vygotsky observed how higher mental functions developed through social interactions with significant people in a child''s life, particularly parents, but also other adults. Through these interactions, a child came to learn the habits of mind of her/his culture, including speech patterns, written language, and other symbolic knowledge through which the child derives meaning and affects a child''s construction of his or her knowledge. This key premise of Vygotskian psychology is often referred to as cultural mediation. The specific knowledge gained by a child through these interactions also represented the shared knowledge of a culture. This process is known as internalization.

Miller, R: Vygotsky in Perspective

'Lev Vygotsky has acquired the status of one of the grand masters in psychology. Following the English translation and publication of his Collected Works there has been a new wave of interest in Vygotsky accompanied by a burgeoning of secondary literature. Ronald Miller argues that Vygotsky is increasingly being 'read' and understood through secondary sources and that scholars have claimed Vygotsky as the foundational figure for their own theories, eliminating his most distinctive contributions and distorting his theories. Miller peels away the accumulated layers of commentary to provide a clearer understanding of how Vygotsky built and developed his arguments. In an in-depth analysis of the last three chapters of Vygotsky's book Thinking and Speech, Miller provides a critical interpretation of the core theoretical concepts that constitute Vygotsky's cultural-historical theory, including the development of concepts, mediation, the zone of proximal development, conscious awareness, inner speech, word meaning and consciousness'--

Semiotics in Mathematics Education
12,90 CHF *
zzgl. 3,50 CHF Versand

This volume discusses semiotics in mathematics education as an activity with a formal sign system, in which each sign represents something else. Theories presented by Saussure, Peirce, Vygotsky and other writers on semiotics are summarized in their relevance to the teaching and learning of mathematics. The significance of signs for mathematics education lies in their ubiquitous use in every branch of mathematics. Such use involves seeing the general in the particular, a process that is not always clear to learners. Therefore, in several traditional frameworks, semiotics has the potential to serve as a powerful conceptual lens in investigating diverse topics in mathematics education research. Topics that are implicated include (but are not limited to): the birth of signs; embodiment, gestures and artifacts; segmentation and communicative fields; cultural mediation; social semiotics; linguistic theories; chains of signification; semiotic bundles; relationships among various sign systems; intersubjectivity; diagrammatic and inferential reasoning; and semiotics as the focus of innovative learning and teaching materials.
